Perforce's idea incubator, "P4IdeaX" quietly launched last November. P4IdeaX.com has been providing a solid conduit for user suggestions and feedback in support of the ongoing Ecosystem efforts. It provides a two-way dialogue between our developers and our community. Anyone and everyone is able (and encouraged!) to create an account and immediately start submitting ideas and voting on existing suggestions.
We're trying to maintain a focus on remaining constructive and positive, so there isn’t even a “down vote” option. If you aren’t in favor of a suggestion, just ignore it rather than tell someone why their idea is terrible. The hope is that this will help keep the focus right where we want it, on providing real solutions to user’s needs.
A number of the suggestions in P4IdeaX were already in development. Proving that great minds think alike, three of the top five of these oft-requested items were already in development and are in the 2012.1 beta release: “.ignore support” and “create recursive p4 add option”, as well as introducing the long-awaited ability to run Perforce over SSL.
The “Visual Studio Integration” suggestion was also already in development – stay tuned for the upcoming beta of the new P4VS plug-in. Our plan is to continue drawing inspiration from this conduit, and others, providing updates as we progress with our plans to open up and share not only our products, but our engineering process and an overwhelming passion for “Version Everything!”
P4IdeaX is designed with a heavy emphasis on simplicity, offering a menu of four easy-to-digest options; Share, Upvote, Discuss, and Read Feedback. We felt that a tool focused on simplicity would allow people the lowest barrier to entry and really give us the best chance of seeing ideas from all segments of our community. From the complex blue-sky thinking all the way to a simple menu-item tweak, we want to hear it all. So don't hesitate to put your every Perforcian daydream up for general consumption, even if it's a suggestion about P4IdeaX itself.
We always welcome the chance to engage with our community, so if this isn't the right conduit for you please feel free to reach out via whatever method you are most comfortable with. In addition to P4IdeaX the Perforce social media team has an active presence on our Blog, Forums, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and even recently on Pinterest. So, find us in whatever pool, pipe, or puddle you like to call home on the internet and offer up your thoughts, praise, or criticism, we want to hear it all.
Patrick comes equipped with a somewhat eclectic background, from studying trumpet performance at the New England Conservatory of Music, to computer science at the University of Michigan, to a stint in the US Navy. His love of computers and technology remained as a consistent theme throughout. Most notably Patrick hails from Slashdot.org where he wrote under the nomme du keyboard of "scuttlemonkey" and eventually took over site direction there before starting to help others learn from the years of practical experience contained within the Slashdot community. Patrick is now in charge of social media and all things "Ecosystem" at Perforce and still hates writing these bios.
