The most recent version of ISO 9001 was released in 2015 and aims to help companies improve customer experience, meet regulatory requirements, manage supplier and partner relationships, and achieve continual company success.

What IS ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is a quality management system (QMS) standard that is designed to help all organizations — regardless of size and industry — effectively implement, maintain, and organize their quality management process, so they can consistently deliver products and services that meet requirements that satisfy customers and adhere to regulations.
What Is a Quality Management System (QMS)?
A good quality management system documents processes and procedures geared toward meeting quality policy goals and regulations, as well as exceeding customer expectations.
Because ISO 9001 was created specifically to guide company approaches to QMS, it is the most recognized and well-established standard for designing such systems.
Businesses can use a QMS to:
- Define quality policy and objectives
- Document procedures and instructions
- Establish internal processes
- Monitor performance
- Meet ISO 9001 exacting requirements.
ISO 9001 is the accepted international standard for quality and defines quality management principles (QMPs). The QMPs include customer focus, process approach, continuous improvement, and more. The same international experts of ISO/TC 176 are responsible for developing and updating the QMPs and the ISO 9001 QMS.
Back to topWhy Is ISO 9001 Important?
The quality management system required by the ISO 9001 standard gives confidence to all stakeholders — customers, suppliers, staff, and management — that systems and processes are in place to manage all aspects of quality including regulatory requirements.
The intent behind the standard is to provide a structured process to ensure that effective quality management is achieved for continual improvement and breaks down requirements into sections, such as planning process interactions, resource management, and designing and delivering the final product.
As many organizations now are located all over the world with branches in different locations, ISO 9001 provides a consistent framework with structured guidelines that allow for the design of a QMS that works best for an individual business. And, because ISO 9001 certification requires that the quality process is regularly audited, a system of continuous improvement can be implemented.
Back to topWhat Are the Benefits of ISO 9001 Certification?
With the overall goal to help organizations deliver high-quality products and services, ISO 9001 helps organizations enjoy many benefits, including:
- Loyal customers
- Productivity gains
- Reduced costs
- Increased efficiency
- Data-driven insights
While any organization can benefit from ISO 9001 certification and using solutions that are ISO 9001 certified, it can be particularly helpful for sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, and construction, because these areas typically have many moving parts, are service-based, and operate hardware and software processes that require complex coordination to produce high-quality products on which customers rely.
What's more, these industries are often highly regulated, so achieving ISO 9001 certification shows adherence to a globally recognized industry standard for quality and enhances the credibility of the organization.
