RSA Insurance, one of Canada’s leading property and casualty insurance companies, provides home, car, business and travel insurance through a network of independent brokers nationwide. With almost 4,200 employees in regional offices and branches coast to coast, RSA needed to effectively manage communication between the development and IT teams.

The Quality Management & Improvement team at RSA works with various teams throughout Canada, as well as offshore partners to help with testing. Using manual processes to test application changes was becoming overwhelming and time consuming. The lack of a standard, common methodology and terminology made it challenging when transitioning from project to project, each with a different process.

Changing the Landscape

To better manage its testing processes and ensure software quality, RSA needed to update its IT organization’s backend tools. RSA selected Helix ALM to manage defects and test cases.

“Perforce has changed the landscape in our IT organization,” said Tom Richards, Quality Management & Improvement Director. “Having all testing artifacts stored in a common place resolved many problems for us such as security, data integrity, accessibility, testing efficiency, traceability and reporting.”

The ability to easily access project metrics was also extremely important to RSA. Helix ALM's Reporting Platform allows them to extract and view metrics across all of the projects that are managed with Perforce tools as opposed to in the past when projects were siloed.

With 185 active users, RSA Canada also saw the traceability benefit that Helix ALM could provide across the different teams. Having the test cases, test runs and the defects integrated, simplifies the test management and reporting tasks. “Before the use of Helix ALM, it would take great effort to compile enterprise reports, let alone a single project report,” said

Valentin Blaga, Senior Quality Management Analyst. “With Helix ALM, we now have the ability to create meaningful reports with relative ease.”

Streamlined Communication and Productivity Gains

RSA has seen an improvement in productivity with Perforce because it has streamlined communications between development, QA, and RSA’s different divisions. Perforce solutions have become an integral part of RSA’s testing toolset. “In 2014, we plan to have all projects use Helix ALM, which helps us standardize all test artifacts,” said Tom.

In addition, Helix ALM’s built-in email tracking allows RSA to send and receive emails at a Helix item level. All emails related to a defect, test case or test execution are tracked and stored with that particular item. “You do not have to go in your mail client and search for these emails. The integration of Helix ALM Client with Outlook Client has greatly improved the collaboration between our departments and partners,” Valentin said.

Another benefit is productivity gains in testing. While the automated scripts run, RSA executes its manual test cases in parallel. The increased flow has allowed them to absorb time delays in project deliveries to the testing team.

“We are pleased with our results and are looking to expand automation to other applications,” said Tom.
